Description

Shows a double-hulled war canoe in the foreground, with a figure in a tall white-feathered headdress at the left end, and about ten men sitting on the boat's platform. In the right background are two other boats of the same design, flying small square flags tied to the high stern ends.

Plate 148 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist and Monin as the engraver.

Hodges made several versions of this scene (See Joppien and Smith's "The art of Captain Cook's voyages" (1985), vol 2, page 213. This version seems to be based on Woollett's engraving in Cook (17770, vol. I, plate LXI (facing page 342).
