Description: A circus herald advertising the Fitzgerald Brothers' Circus. Recto shows portrait illustrations of the two Fitzgerald Brothers at the top corners, and below is a large scene showing many acts going on in the Big Top. Performers included: The Zenobia Brothers (globe on a tightrope), Gilleno (musical clown), dog show introduced by Manzoni (from the Folies Bergeres), Mdemoiselle Onra (tightrope), Miss Beryl Loraine (contortionist and dancer), Eric and Reano (aerial trapeze comedians), The Flying Meteors, Benato the Clown, The Marottos (horizontal bar) Contains a warning that any swindlers, gamblers, fakirs making false claims and undermining the circus affidavits, will be arrested if found on the grounds. Description: Shows three huts, grouped around a courtyard, wherein, at right, two women are engaged in rolling out fabric lengths or mats on the ground. They are in the process of making the fabric as explained in the text Domeny de Rienzi's book (volume 2, page 43 in French edition). Plate 115 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Chavannes engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Chavannes). Plate 86 in Freycinet's "Voyage autour du monde", Atlas historique (1825), where it is attributed to Pellion. Description: Programme broadsheet for a performance by Harmston's Circus. Performers include: Hakata and Kota (Risley act), Katie Montgomery (rider), Rudolf Strief (with elephant "Babe"), Mr P Montgomery (with arab stallions, and with trick ponies "Midget" and "Bantam"), Cuzco and Willie (throwing and spinning hats), F Harmston (horse riding), The Aldeans (gymnasts), Miss Ruby Scardsdale (trapeze), Gilbert Eldred (horse riding and baton leaping), G W Stewart (horse riding); Mdlle Annette, Blanche, Brandon, Laing, Scarsdale and Nellie Harmston-Love (Indian club swinging); Hashinoto (slide wire). The broadsheet also contains advertisements about: Nurse Woodward's health syrup, Pearce's Boot Warehouse, Arcade Auction Rooms, Dr Speer (for chronic and nervous diseases), Nelson Moate teas, Geo A Mawson (confectioner), Te Aro House; and a full page advertisement for Wardell Bros & Co (grocers of Willis Street Wellington) on the verso. The Wardell's advertisement on the verso indicates that the month was October. Date estimated at 1895 - the Aldeans are said to have performed with Harmston's Circus during 1895-1897. Charles Woodward who performed with the Circus in 1896 in Calcutta, is said by descendants to have "joined the circus" when it visited New Zealand. Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s). Description: A carcitaure of John Wilkes who was the member for Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Represented as a foolish grinning man with demonic horns formed by his wig. He is seated on a chair and twirling the cap of Liberty (a fool's cap) upon the end of a stick. On the table beside him are two papers of the New Briton, Nos 17 and 45. His squint is just slightly exaggerated to turn his grin into the leer of a cynic; his wig is just slightly curled back into the horns of a devil. Source of descriptive information - Jenny Uglow. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Title John Wilkes, the libertine supporter if William Pitt the Elder, and editor of the New Briton newspaper, was arrested and imprisoned for his fierce attack on King George II and his Prime Minister, the Scottish, Lord Bute. He was charged with seditious libel attack on the King's speech on the opening of Parliament in the 23 April 1763 issue of the New Briton (No 45).
