Description: Shows the Ahuena heiau, a great raised stonework platform built on a point at the Western end of Kamakahonu. The temple is thatched with bundles of dried ti leaves and stands within a fenced enclosure. John Ii, part of Kamehameha's court at the time, describes it thus: "Ahuena house, which was a heiau, was enclosed within a fence of lama wood and within this fence, toward the front on the west and facing inland, there was an anu'u tower. A row of images stood along its front, as befitted a Hale o Lono [House of Lono, god of peace and agriculture]. Images stood at the northwest corner of the house, with a stone pavement in front ... On the west side of the outer entrance was a large image called Koleamoku, on whose helmet perched the figure of a plover". (Quoted in: "Encounter with paradise; views of Hawaii and its people, 1778-1941", by David Forbes, 1992). This engraving copies Choris' original watercolour, but adds a barge at the left foreground, and brings forward slightly the distant scene at left, making the village closer, and the far hills less obvious. Unlike Choris' original, it omits the four figures sitting and bathing in the centre foreground. Plate 17 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist (from Choris) for this plate.
