Description: Shows three huts, grouped around a courtyard, wherein, at right, two women are engaged in rolling out fabric lengths or mats on the ground. They are in the process of making the fabric as explained in the text Domeny de Rienzi's book (volume 2, page 43 in French edition). Plate 115 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Chavannes engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Chavannes). Plate 86 in Freycinet's "Voyage autour du monde", Atlas historique (1825), where it is attributed to Pellion. Description: Each poster shows a montage design based on photographs. The "Korero Hau Kura" set contains posters for the following Maori proverbs: Kia mau ki te aka matua; kei mau ki te aka taepa (Grasp the vine planted in the ground, not the vine from the heavens) He poporo tu ki te hamuti (A cherished one, standing undaunted in adversity) Ka tuhi Kaitangata (A mark of Kaitangata) Hauhake tu, ka to a Matariki (A time to harvest as Matariki sets) Ae ko Hotumauea te tangata nei (Yes indeed this person is Hotumauea) Ka maru koe i toku pureke, he kahu pitongatonga (The hem of my fine cloak will shelter you) Nga Reo o Aotearoa, "Voices of Aotearoa"; a collection of treasured Maori stories, contains posters about the following stories: Arai-te-uru - Canoe which brought Rongo-i-tua and his people to New Zealand. It was wrecked at Matakaea and its kumara cargo became the Moeraki boulders. Kahukura - the story of his tricking the patupaiarehe while they were fishing Kuiarau - while bathing in a small lake at Rotorua she was taken by taniwha. Her husband Tamahika asked the gods to kill the taniwha, and they did so by boiling the lake waters. Kaiwhakaruaki - a man-eating taniwha who was killed by warriors near Parapara Golden Bay, after a fight during which he killed many of the warriors. Kua mau i te ao - the story of the naming of Mauao (Mount Maunganui), Puwhenua's mountain suitor who was caught (mau) by the light of day (ao). Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of two women, one man and an infant. These are selected from Plate 70 in Dumont DUrville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe ... (Paris, 1833), portraits 3,5 and 6, and therefore show Ekara, young girl of the Bay of Islands, and Tawiti and his wife. Tawiti's wife holds a baby wrapped in her cloak by her shoulder. Plate 176 from an unknown publication in German or Dutch, derived at least partly from Dumont D'Urville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe". Other Titles - New Zealand. Description: Shows a tall young woman (said in the text to be about fifteen or sixteen years old), with striped loincloth, tattooed upper chest, and lower arms and legs. She is carrying a basket of flowers and is being admired by three smaller girls at the left. The location is likely to be Tonga rather than the Caroline Islands Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy travelled for many years in the 1820-1850s, but the travels illustrated here must have been undertaken in the 1820-1830s. Description: Sketch shows a view of a curve in the river with two canoes, one near to the viewer with five occupants, and one further away. Behind the further canoe, reflected in the water, are four structures of vertical wooden poles (possibly a hakari / food storage tower). Betty McFadgen, Museum of New Zealand does not believe that this is a Pacific scene. Could be Africa, West Indies?. Subsequently (mid 1970s) attributed by Library staff to George French Angas, then reattributed as an unknown artist, not a Solomon Islands scene and possibly not the Pacific. Description: Shows a missionary in a bush clearing, carrying an umbrella, standing on a path beside a robed Maori man. Behind at left is a party of seven Maori, three carrying bundles on their heads. Drawn after Sainson's Missionaire de la Nouvelle Zelande avec sa suite - lithographe in Dumont d"Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris: Furne et Cie, 1839. Plate 2, opp. p.398. ATL has this at: qR 910.8 DUM Voya. This copy is from an edition of Domeny de Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held in ATL. This is concluded because title is given in French only, instead of two or even three languages. There were several editions of the work between 1836-72. Copy negative 1/2-C-10071-F from Domeny de Rienzi's "Oceanie" (1863). There is a file print from this negative, in Drawings and Prints artist/title file, and a colour transparency in the transparency file..
