Description: Head and shoulders portrait of Tu, Pomare I of Tahiti, closely resembling the engraved portrait after William Hodges' drawing done on James Cook's 2nd voyage. Tu has a full head of frizzy hair and is wearing a woven garment with fringed collar. Title from engraving of same subject by J Hall after drawing by W Hodges, published in: Cook, J. A voyage towards the South Pole... London 1777. Plate 38 Sotheby's catalogue suggests that this and A-111-024 may be studies for engravings, based on Hodges' original sketches. However, they may also be copies of the engravings. This drawing faces the same way as the engraving, whereas Hodges' original chalk drawing (National Library of Australia, Joppien Smith no. 2.54) faces the opposite way, suggesting the engraver J. Hall worked directly from the drawing, finishing up with a portrait facing in the opposite direction. It appears to be an eighteenth century work Paper watermarked with a heraldic device Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Signed: I Johnson. No. III, lower left. [Signature could be J. Johnson or F. Johnson] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Grey and brown wash 265 x 210 mm
