Description

Shows five figures (at least three women) seated with fruit in 2 bowls, outside a hut with barrel roof. There is a palm tree in the left background.

De Sainson sometimes prepared his images for Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque..." based on impressions of New Zealand, rather than drawings done in New Zealand. Danvin has further added coconut palm.

Danvin has copied this image from de Sainson's original work entitled "Personnages tabouees" in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris, 1834. vol.2, opp. p.374 (qRare 910.8 DUM Voya).

From a French edition of Domeny di Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held by the Library; ATL's copies have title of work in either 2 or 3 languages beneath the image, whereas this work has title in French only. The book was reissued several times between its original publication in 1836-37 and 1872.

ATL has 1863 edition at 919 DOM.
