Description: Shows an outdoor meeting with male figures seated in a circle around two protagonists; one of these two (the 'King') sits crosslegged with a low half-unrolled woven screen behind him, and the other prostrates himself at the knees of the king. In the background are dwellings, palm trees and mountains. This engraving copies an engraving from an original drawing by Webber, showing similar figures but in an interior setting, with beam and rafter construction above all the participants. Plate 18 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist for this plate, and Montaut was the engraver. Description: Shows two small children dancing in the midst of a crowd of onlookers, one of whom is a European seated on a chair on the left, with a feathered hat and a cane. Behind him stands a male attendant with a feather fan, and beside him on the ground are seated two young women. A man plays a drum in the right forground. Plate 130 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist and Montaut as the engraver. Description: Based loosely on a 1777 work by Webber "The reception of Captain Cook at Hapaee", showing two pairs of fighters in a large circle of onlookers. One pair is boxing and the other pair fights with clubs. Two sheaves of bound branches stand at either side in the background, in front of thatched dwellings. Plate 201 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, where it is entitled "Fetes et jeux", Danvin is inscribed as the copyist, and Montaut as the engraver. Description: Shows five figures (at least three women) seated with fruit in 2 bowls, outside a hut with barrel roof. There is a palm tree in the left background. De Sainson sometimes prepared his images for Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque..." based on impressions of New Zealand, rather than drawings done in New Zealand. Danvin has further added coconut palm. Danvin has copied this image from de Sainson's original work entitled "Personnages tabouees" in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde..." Paris, 1834. vol.2, opp. p.374 (qRare 910.8 DUM Voya). From a French edition of Domeny di Rienzi's "Oceanie" not held by the Library; ATL's copies have title of work in either 2 or 3 languages beneath the image, whereas this work has title in French only. The book was reissued several times between its original publication in 1836-37 and 1872. ATL has 1863 edition at 919 DOM.
