Description

Top image shows mourners around the cloaked and wreathed body of a deceased Maori man who is propped up with his back again a carved pole. Two women kneel before him, cutting their bare breasts. Other mourners are seated on the ground in the background. There are three skulls and other bones in the left foreground.

The lower image shows two Maori men carrying on their shoulders a litter holding the body of a dead chief who is seated upright, securely bound.
