Description: Folder comprising research material relating to the opera 'Hohepa' (2012) concerning Hōhepa Te Umuroa (Te Ati Haunui-a-Pāpārangi, 1822?-1847). The folder includes copies (some annotated) of research papers, newspaper clippings, ephemera, official records and correspondence. The latter is largely between New Zealand and Australian government officials and relates to the repatriation of Te Umuroa's remains from Maria Island, Tasmania, in 1988. Also contains musical notation of a ruru and typescripts of karakia. Annotation on folder compiled by McLeod reads "First sources of my opera Hohepa... Mostly material given to me by Matiu Māreikura after the Whanganui elders' journey to Maria Island to bring back the bones of Te Umuroa". Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Photographs relating to the Wanganui District The first photograph is of a group of 15 men some holding mere and one holding a taiaha and wearing improvised flax skirts with their trousers rolled up, probably a haka group. The second is of eight women and a man sitting or standing near a coffin covered in blankets and kakahu. The women are wearing wreaths made of leaves. The coffin is on the verandah of a house and on the wall behind it is a display of portraits of ancestors each with a fringed cloth over the top edge. The third is of 19 women, one holding a baby, a girl and five men, one in a uniform. The women have thick coats and shawls on and two of the women seated at the front are also wearing wreaths made of leaves. These two are giving a hongi. Although the location is descibed as Wanganui District on the deposit form each photograph also has the name Kaitarakihi stamped on it. Photographer unidentified.
