Description: View of Pohaturoa Rock across the Waikato River. The rock is situated near Atiamuri. Photographed by Thomas Pringle in about 1908 The rock is a volcanic crag or "plug" of rhyolite rising 245m above the Waikato River. It figures in the tribal narratives of both the Arawa and Ngati Raukawa people, and was often used as a lookout post during inter-tribal wars. Description: Carved doorway, entrance to the meeting house at Mourea Pa, Lake Rotoiti. Phtotgraphed by Thomas Pringle in about 1908 According to John C M Cresswell (Maori Meeting Houses of the North Island, P.C.S. Publications, Auckland, 1977), the present meeting house at Mourea Pa was "reconstructed in 1914 from timbers of an older house of the Ngati Pikiao."
