It converted natural gas to methanol and then to synthetic petrol. When oil prices fell, the plant switched and produced methanol for export. Production ceased in 2004 and the plant was mothballed. Description: As the manager marches grimly into his office two of his employees comments to each other that it looks as though his trip was not too successful and that he had hoped that the joint venture with Australia would have shown a better return than a 19-all draw. Refers to the All Blacks 19-all draw with Australia in 1988. Captain David Kirk led the All Blacks through one of their most dominant periods as they remained unbeaten from 1987 to 1990 except for the 19-all blemish. The boss's 'business trip' was obviously a trip to Australia to watch the game. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Description: A group of men stand around in a pub watching a car race on television as they drink. The explanation for the emotional reaction by one of the punters when he sees a BMW win a race is explained by the sad news that he owned one that was repossessed after the stockmarket crash. Refers to 'Black Monday', 19 October, 1987, when stock markets around the world crashed. New Zealand's market was hit especially hard, falling about 60% from its 1987 peak, and taking several years to recover. In Australia and New Zealand the 1987 crash is also referred to as Black Tuesday because of the timezone difference. - (Information Wikipedia) Text 'Lodge Laughs' at top left Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Two men in the corridor watch in amazement and one comments 'Utter confusion!" The decision to sell equity in Air New Zealand was announced in the 1987 Budget but negotiations that had started with Qantas were called off in October 1988 and the sale was reopened to new bids on the basis that 65% must remain in New Zealand hands, with 30% of the total being made available to Air New Zealand staff and the public, and the Government retaining one special rights preference share (the "Kiwi Share") to control the foreign ownership level and safeguard the airline's New Zealand identity.
