Travel memoir and journal by William Douglas Cook recording World War One experiences from period of active service in France and Belgium, April to 29 September 1916, written while travelling through France and Belgium in 1922. The introduction is dated Armentieres, 7 December 1922.
The journal records impressions of the journey from London to France and Belgium, with commentary on the people and places he visited.
Places mentioned include: 'Bouloine' [Boulogne-sur-Mer], Calais, 'St Omer' [Saint-Omer], 'Aire sur al Lys' [Aire-sur-la-Lys], 'Les Ciseaux', Armentières, 'Pont Nieppe' [Pont-de-Nieppe], Ypres, Bruge, Brussels, 'Tournay' [Tournai], Lille, Arras, Albert, Amiens, 'Fontaine sur Somme' [Fontaine-sur-Somme], Rouen, Paris, Versailles, and Dieppe.
Illustrated with mounted black and white photographic prints documenting landscapes, houses, and people. Photographs taken during the period 1916 to 1922.
Includes two printed French visiting cards: "Gabrielle Lemaille, Rue du Pave Fruit Pont-de-Nippe" and "Mr & Mme Lemaille-Trehout, Rue du Pave Fruit Pont-de-Nieppe" along with corresponding group portrait.
The final page features the signatures of former members of the 12th Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery: K D Henderson [Kenneth Dudley Henderson (1894-1978)], J A Guild [James Alexander Guild (1883-1965)], R A Collie [Robert Alexander Collie (1894-1973)], W MacKay, A Watson, R L Symonds [Ronald Leonard Symonds (1888-1971)], W F Donald [William Francis Donald (1889-1978)], H C Connor [Henry Condie Connor (1895-1967)], W McQueen [William McQueen (1894-1926)], F D Boswell [Frederick Duncan Boswell (1894-1954)], and L Beaumont [Llewellyn Henry Norman Beaumont (1892-1963)].

Provenance: Manuscript originally belonged to Ms Joanne Bates' mother. After she passed away Ms Bates contacted David Bridgman with the diary. He in turn contacted the Hocken Collections with this diary. The Hocken Collections then deposited the diary with the Alexander Turnbull Library, with Ms Bates' consent.
