Description: Photocopies of diary from the period August 1916 to September 1917. Comprises one page of biographical notes on Elsie Grey. Typescript partial transcription of letters in the form of a diary to December 1916, and in diary-form from December 1916 to 4 September 1917; also photocopies of the original manuscript diary. Grey describes voyage to England, via Panama, work at No 3 New Zealand Hospital at Codford, and at No 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital at Amiens, which was moved to Hazebrouck, the evacuation to a monastery at St Omer and part of a sightseeing tour of Scotland. The effects of Sling Camp on wounded soldiers is mentioned. It is presumed, as per preliminary notes in the typescript, that Grey returned to France in the period after the diary ends, before eventually returning to New Zealand Title transcribed from item. Description: Letter from Louis Melville Theakstone to Ethel Sturm (1915) with additional information suplied by Michael McLean; and transcription of incomplete letter from Claude Burley to Ethel Sturm (n d). The first four pages of Claude Burley's 24-page letter describes his experiences of the war in general and specifically; he mentions various New Zealanders he met, the various areas and battles he was in including Armentieres, Amiens, Freicourt, Flers, the battle of the Somme and the soldiers eventual departure for Southampton and arrival in Wales. The letter from Claude Burley was written in [Oct?] 1915 while he was convalescing with the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment; he describes the battalion's march from Airaines to the Somme (2 Sep), his participation in the major offensive against the Germans from 15 to 21 Sep, when they rested, the artillery bombardment of the German lines, the advance on and capture of their forward trenches, the first deployment of tanks, the contribution of aircraft in the battle and the physical conditions at the front for the soldiers. Description: Album includes two photographs taken by Zak Studios of the No. 27 Senior Scout Cadets (Wellington), on a tour to Auckland 1913-1914; the No. 27 Company Champion Rifle Team 1913. One photograph of HMNZ Troopship "Arawa" was taken by William Nees. Most of the other photographs in the album were taken by W J Clachan while serving with the British Army Middlesex Regiment (the Duke of Cambridges Own), and with the British Army 1st King's African Rifles. The introduction is dated Armentieres, 7 December 1922. The journal records impressions of the journey from London to France and Belgium, with commentary on the people and places he visited. Places mentioned include: 'Bouloine' [Boulogne-sur-Mer], Calais, 'St Omer' [Saint-Omer], 'Aire sur al Lys' [Aire-sur-la-Lys], 'Les Ciseaux', Armentières, 'Pont Nieppe' [Pont-de-Nieppe], Ypres, Bruge, Brussels, 'Tournay' [Tournai], Lille, Arras, Albert, Amiens, 'Fontaine sur Somme' [Fontaine-sur-Somme], Rouen, Paris, Versailles, and Dieppe. Description: Photograph album relating to nursing work and travels during World War I, probably compiled by Elizabeth Porteous of the NZANZ (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) who was awarded the ARRC (Associate Royal Red Cross). The images, which are well identified, are chiefly of Egypt and England. New Zealand Expeditionary Force hospitals and convalescent homes are featured, as are scenes of the local community and tourist sites. There are also a few images documenting the journey aboard hospital ships. Views of Heliopolis, Egypt, include the Sultana's Palace, Luna Park (the site of the Australian Auxillary Hospital), and the Heliopolis Palace Hotel (the site of the No.1 Australian General Hospital). Views of Luxor, Egypt, include temples and the Colossi of Memnon. Views of Cairo, Egypt, include the Kasr-el-Nil Bridge, zoological gardens, Barrage Gardens, street scenes, and a military hospital in the Citadel. Views of Aboukir Bay, Egypt, show an old fort, and a group of nurses relaxing in the ocean. Views of Alexandria, Egypt, include catacombs and exhibits in a museum. Views of Pont de Koubbeh, Egypt, show an exterior view of the New Zealand General Hospital, nurses' home, and patients from Ward I and Ward IA.
