Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Leonard Willaim Jury, great-great-grandson of the original owner; history of the Jury family. This history was compiled by Len Jury, ca 1985 and includes a history of the farm as well as information about the William Bryan, the Battle of Waireka, reminiscences related to the family and local history. Copy of article by NZ Historic Places Trust entitled `Archaeological investigations: Jury and Autridge farmsteads, Omata' (2007) The original owner was Elizabeth (nee Hoskin) wife of Jesse (Justinian) Jury. She purchased 46 acres of the Omata Block from the Plymouth Company in 1847. The Jury family arrived in New Plymouth on the `William Bryan' in 1841. In 2007 Leonard William Jury and his wife Heather owned the property at Omata and were awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Description: Charters, a Southland farmer, left New Zealand with the Otago Mounted Rifles in 1915 and after training in Egypt saw action in the Gallipoli Campaign. After their evacuation from Gallipoli the Otago Mounted Rifles were disbanded and he joined the Pioneer Battalion, arriving in France in May 1916. Charter's underwent officer training in 1917 and in June was posted to the Second Battalion of the Otago Regiment. He was wounded and awarded the Military Cross in October 1918. `And that's that; a personal history : 1915-1919', an account of his war experiences based on his diaries was written while he was recuperating from his wounds in Dunedin Hospital in 1919. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society.
