Description: The letters were edited by the author to delete references to family matters. What remains is a detailed description of the conduct of the War as seen from Rogers' perspective. His duties involved managing traffic to and from the front and collecting intelligence. This kept him in close contact with the New Zealand Army during the various campaigns it was involved in in France. Rogers pays particular attention to his dealings with both Corps and regimental officers and men. Relationship complexity - Further photographs by Stanley are in the photographic collection of James Henderson, Photographs, chiefly relating to Stanley Dick Rogers, a Captain in New Zealand Mounted Rifles during World I, PACOLL-8637 Rogers worked at the Railway Workshops in Petone. He joined the Volunteers in 1902 and was frequently seconded to the Defence Department. In Aug 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commandant on Somes Island. In February 1916 he left New Zealand aboard the `Rangiotu' with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade for Egypt and subsequently landed in France in May 1916. In August 1916 he was seconded as a field officer, II ANZAC Army Corp (later Headquarters XXII Corps) and appointed Road and Traffic supervisor. Describes voyage to Egypt aboard the transport ship `Arawa'. Describes training in Egypt at Zeitoun and fighting during the Turkish campaign in Suez and Gallipoli. Diaries span one full year, 6 August 1914 - 6 August 1915. Letter books include many detailed letters home to his wife, Ida Malone and other family members. Description: Papers of A C Gifford and A W Bickerton whose common interest was astronomy. Gifford's other interests included Shakespeare authorship, social credit, tramping in the Te Anau-Milford area. He taught at Christ's College and Wellington College, 1895-1927. Bickerton's papers, which were sent to Gifford after Bickerton's death include 29 volumes of journals, 1911-1928, and are concerned largely with astronomy, his advancing old age and daily activities. A large mass of articles and notes refer mainly to astronomy but also to his dismissal from the academic staff of Canterbury University College by the College board of governors in 1895.
