- Description
Shows scene in the crater of a volcano, showing several fumaroles, watched by two figures in the left foreground. The text in Domeny de Rienzi's book, French edition, volume 2, page 15, transcribes the name of the volcano as Kiro-Ea, which may be the present Kilauea.
Plate 112 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Ales engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Ales).
Dampier and his group walked to the crater, on the slopes of Mauna Loa, in late June, 1825.
Appears in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde" (1834-35) opposite page 430, as "Volcan de Kirau-ea". For Dumont d'Urville's book, it was probably drawn by Sainson.
