Description: Shows scene in the crater of a volcano, showing several fumaroles, watched by two figures in the left foreground. The text in Domeny de Rienzi's book, French edition, volume 2, page 15, transcribes the name of the volcano as Kiro-Ea, which may be the present Kilauea. Plate 112 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Ales engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Ales). Dampier and his group walked to the crater, on the slopes of Mauna Loa, in late June, 1825. Appears in Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde" (1834-35) opposite page 430, as "Volcan de Kirau-ea". For Dumont d'Urville's book, it was probably drawn by Sainson. Description: Album compiled from photographs taken 1872-1876 on the voyage of HMS Challenger. Photographs taken by three photographers: Corporal Caleb Newbold, official photographer of the Challenger Expedition, 7 December 1872 to 6 April 1874; Frederick Hodgeson, 8 June 1874 to 11 January 1875; and Jesse Lay, 14 January 1875 to 26 May 1876. Comprises topographical, ethographical and architectural views in Fiji, New Guinea, Admiralty Islands, Friendly Islands (Tonga), Hawaii, Society Islands, Valparaiso, Juan Fernandez, Puntas Arena and the Straits of Majellan. Included are portraits of Queen Salote Lupe Pau'u and King Taufa'ahu Tupou I of Tonga, King Kalakaua and Queen Emma of Hawaii, and Titaua Brander of Tahiti. The Challenger expedition was a scientific survey of the seabed of the worlds oceans, funded by the British Government.
