Description

Shows a group of mourners in front of a carved whare with rakau roof, carved tekoteko, and carvings around the entrance doorway. In the porch the body is wrapped in a red blanket and cloaked figures sit on either side with eyes lowered. The seated woman on the right has a headdress of brown leaves or striped feathers and chin moko. On the far right stands a man with full-face moko, wearing a feather cloak and holding a long taiaha. At the far left is a group of figures, one seated and two standing, one with a baby on her back tucked under her cloak.

Watercolour attributed by the vendor to John A Gilfillan, depicting a scene in the area in which he lived. It appears to be by a more primitive hand. It is signed J.G. or I.G. This could be his son John Gordon Gilfillan, the only child whose name begins with an I or a J.

Inscriptions: Verso - top right - [Title]; Recto - bottom left - J.G. or I.G.
