Description

Shows a large tree in the centre foreground, leaning to the right. In the background is a bay with dwellings along the water's edge. There is a group of three in the foreground and another group along the shore at the left.

Plate 164 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist, and Chavannes as the engraver.

Artist is variously described as travelling in the 1780s and the 1820s. Artist's idea not clear; he may be Commander Robert Elliot, b 1767 (as ascribed by the National Library of Australia which holds the original oil painting), or Captain Robert J Elliot.
