Description: Album relating to the establishment of a phosphate mining industry at Makatea Island in the Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia, between 1909 and 1913. Images show some of the people involved with the Compagnie Francaise des Phosphates de L'Oceanie, including Maitre Goupil, and Messieurs Touze, Agache and Bonnet; the offices of the company, both in Papeete and on Makatea Island; and the home of Mr Agache in Papeete. There are scenes of sailing ships and steam ships delivering equipment, and scenes of construction of railway lines, jetties and wharves. As well there are views of the villages of Temao and Vaitepaua where workmen lived, with workers coming from other Polynesian islands and many from Japan. Description: Shows the Vaitepiha River on the Taiarapu Peninsula, Tahiti, 1777. A Tahitian man and woman stand on flat land to the left, a river in the centre. On the river is a canoe and across the river is a village. Tall hills in the background. Acquired with B-091-005 and 006. These drawings, squared up for reproduction, ar considered by Dr R. Joppien to be Webber's preliminary drawings for pl. 5, 6, and 7 in his Views of the South Seas (London, 1808 [i.e. 1809]). The watermark in B-091-006 was in use in the early 1790s (see TL 3/1/1, 13/3/85). Dr J.C. Beaglehole believed them to be copies. Other Titles - Vaitepiha Title and ascription from pencil inscription on verso, which continues: "Sent to Dr Bett of Nelson by H. Description: Two Raiatean women and two men dancing in a courtyard in front of a building. Musicians are performing on various drums, and with hand-clapping behind them. They are watched on both sides by a crowd of Tahitians, with a few European sailors amongst them. The two male dancers are squatting, while the two women are standing, wearing fanned out tapa skirts, coconut shells over their breasts and hats. Published in Anderson, G. W. Description: Three Raiatean women dancing, two with elaborate ruffs at the waists of their skirts, watched by other Raiateans on the right and accompanied by a flute-player and two drummers on the left, with a child holding a gourd beside a third drum. The women are dancing on woven matting inside a large open dwelling, supported by wooden pillars and with a beamed ceiling. Coconut palms and pandanus can be seen outside on the left and right. The Endeavour visited Raiatea, one of the Society Islands group near Tahiti in July - August 1769. The drawing is based on sketches of dancers by Parkinson, with the details of the building and background from lost sketches, probably also by Parkinson. The State Library of New South Wales has a pen and wash sketch by Cipriani on which this engraving may be based. There is also an oil in England of the same scene. See Joppien & Smith.
