Description: Shows two scenes from the travels of William Dampier, British explorer and pirate, who circumnavigated the world three times. The top scene shows Dampier undergoing a sand-baking to rid himself of a dropsy condition, in about 1685-1686, on some "uninhabited islands of the Californian coast" (See Penny magazine 9 November 1833, page 435). The lower scene shows a European sailor dancing a hornpipe in front of his captain and two inhabitants of Mindanao. The watchers are seated under a shelter with a curved thatched roof and open side.
