Description

The journal begins in March 1858 and ends in November 1858. A note, 24 years later, describes her revisit to Kohanga and gives a brief historical summary. The journal describes life in Auckland, a voyage to Tauranga on the cutter `Hope', and visits to mission stations there and at Maketu, a trip through the thermal area and back to Auckland through Thames, the Waikato and Taupiri. Eliza Jones describes Maori life and conditions, flora and fauna as well as many of the people she met on her journey, including Archeacon Brown, Rev Volkner, John Kinder and Thomas Chapman, whose poem `The rats' lament', about the Maketu rats, is given in full. The journal has been copy edited, probably by A H Reed

This journey described in `Further Maoriland Adventures of J W and E Stack', (Dunedin: Reed, 1938)
