Date: 1860 - 1990 - 1869

From: Various artists :Encounter with Eden ; cards / Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1990

Reference: E-279-q-123

Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by an unknown artist, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. Neither the location of the kainga nor its artist are certain. Its most likely situation is the Waikato River where swampy ground enables the kahikatea to grow to the enormous height seen in the cetral clump of trees. One possible artist is John Kinder. Many elements of the style are reminiscent of his work, including the ethereal floating quality. There are similarities in one of is photographs, dated 1862, showing Te la, the old landing place on the waikato near Maungatawhiri military post. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card
