I ū anō te tauihu ki a Meremere, i muri i tōna eanga mai i te tahatū o te hauāuru, muri tata iho i te tōnga o te rā. I whakamahia a Matariki e ngā kaiwhakatere hei whakahāngai i te taurapa, i tōna aranga mai i te rāwhiti-mā-raki i roto i te hāora kotahi mai o te tōnga o te rā.

Navigation by night

Celestial markers were used throughout the night to keep the waka on course. The prow was aligned to Venus when it appeared soon after sunset on the western horizon. Navigators used Matariki to align the stern when it rose, within an hour of sunset, in the north east.
