A view across Auckland, apparently from Mount Eden, looking towards North Head and Rangitoto. A red ensign flies from a flagpole in the foreground. Buildings are indistinct but the Italianate-style Auckland Hospital stands out in the distance.
Inscriptions: Mat recto - bottom right - "Auckland" New Zealand [in ink, in artist's hand]; Verso - bottom left - (1) Ruapekapeka means Bats Hole [nest] / 2 Mokoia Island / 3 Tikitere [in pencil]
