Dougal Earle Harris Soper born Winton, Southland. Recalls move to Invercargill as father worked for Southland Hospital Board. Outlines family background - Scottish and Welsh. Was apprenticed as plumber and gasfitter and joined Plumbers Union becoming New Zealand President and Assistant Award Advocate on Federation of Labour. Recalls social life and meeting wife Edna. Discusses: work at Alliance Freezing works as a plumber; Award; being Secretary of Southland Drivers Union and National President of Drivers Federation; Communist factor in union; political power with reference to Employment Contracts Act; demise of Union Movement; Elections (1987), standing against Norman Jones and against Bill English for Wallace (1990), 1984 Election strategy and Employment Committee. People mentioned include: Bill Anderson, Ken Douglas, Finton Patrick Walsh, Tom Skinner, Jim Knox, Tony Neary, Len Hedley, Ralph Hannan and Harry Sakkers. Remembers opposition to Springbok Tour and Vietnam War.
