Shows vignettes of three Maori whare, one in Tolaga Bay on the East Coast, and two in the Bay of Islands. The latter two have decorative carving around the windows and doors and on the maihi, or diagonal bargeboards. The hut is unadorned
The chieftan Pomare could refer to Pomare I, originally named Whetoi, who established pa in the Bay of Islands in the late 18th and early 19th centuries
