Description: This grouping of photographic prints relates to artist and writer Alan Taylor. Taken by Daniel Masters, Alan Taylor, and unidentified photographer(s) between 1975 and 1990. Many prints have captions or annotations related to publishing processes. Some prints have matching negatives. Comprises: - Two sets of prints related to the book 'Maori Folk Art' by Alan Taylor. Black and white images taken in 1975 show an exterior view of St John the Baptist Church at Waimate North and the gravestone headboard of Paea Kahuru carved by Nutana Mapi, and a portrait of a Samoan minister and his wife in their bedroom. Colour images taken circa 1980s-1990 show graffiti bombing in Ponsonby, and a flagpole carved as an ancestral marakihau figure at Waimana, Urewera (ET/AT:001). - Two colour exterior views of a colonial villa on Ponsonby Road, Auckland, taken circa 1970s-1980s by Alan Taylor (ET/AT:007). - One set of images related to Alan Taylor's research and writing interests concerning Maori architecture and built structures. Includes a black and white exterior of the Holy Trinity Church, Pakaraka, Northland, taken circa 1980s. The colour images taken in 1987 show various marae and rural locations including the Orakau battlesite memorial; Te Tokanganui-a-Noho meeting-house and urupa, Te Kuiti; the Mangapehi marae; Te Hape marae; Rongokarae and other wharenui at Waimana; Ko Te Poho O Tamaterangi and other wharenui at Ruatoki; and rural homes and wharenui at Urewera. A few views show Alan Taylor, Robert Oti and Daniel Marsters visiting the marae. Some images taken by Daniel Marsters (ET/AT:008). - One set of black and white images relate to articles or pamphlets which Alan Taylor wrote on Maori clothing and weaving for the Institute for Polynesian Studies, Brigham Young University. Images show taniko weaving and kiwi feathers. - Two black and white prints show a Samoan village and fale on a beach. Description: A single sheet calendar shows a picture by E Mervyn Taylor, of a Maori treasure box or wakahuia, whose lid is being held in two hands. Above the box are the faces of a Maori man and woman, showing their moko and pounamu ornaments. The attached text sheet gives some biographical informational about the artist Mervyn Taylor, and discusses moko, hairstyles, Maori ornaments, greenstone (pounamu), ear pendants (kuru), neck pendants (hei), hei tiki, koropepe, Hei matau (pendant shaped like a fish), pekapeka (bat-shaped pendant), wakahuia, and huia. Mr Hemi Bennett's help in checking the information is acknowledged at the bottom of the attached fact sheet. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s).
