Accompanying note from the cartoonist states 'At 8 - 0, and only one race to go, we all need to remember the America's Cup is NOT a matter of Life and Death... It is far more important than that. Psychologists have been in the media giving advice to NZ not to take the big final race too much to heart, 'it's just sport', etc. Cartoon depicts a Kiwi crowd watching America's Cup on a large-screen TV in a yacht club.'
Accompanying wording on the cartoon states 'As the two yachts came to the showdown score of 8 - 8, an ugly howl of primal anxiety swept the crowd like a mid-ocean storm...'
In the competition for the America's Cup, held in September 2013 in San Francisco, Emirates Team New Zealand took a large lead in the early races and seemed to be the inevitable winner, but was beaten by Oracle Team USA. The drama of the early lead and the relentless recovery by Oracle Team USA gripped the New Zealand public.
