Date: 2000-2008

By: Allison, Celia, 1958-

Reference: DC-Group-0034

Description: Cartoons by Celia Allison featuring 'Cecily', which relate to social life and women's experiences in New Zealand. As the artist explains, "In case you have not been introduced to Cecily she is a cartoon character. Not just a stick-thin, pencil-line drawing though, she is a well-rounded character, sometimes more well-rounded than she would like! Cecily is someone that women will recognise, for Cecily's foibles are their own. Cecily diets, skips gym classes, sometimes drinks too much and worries about how she looks. She has bad hair days, occasionally consults her horoscope and struggles with technology. She is a modern woman who lives life to the full as she pursues career, friendship and love." Part of the NZ Cartoon Archive Celia Allison, born 1958, grew up in rural Canterbury, and attended school in Timaru and Christchurch. She holds degrees from the University of Otago and Wellington Polytechnic. Following her graduation Allison worked in illustration and graphic design in Wellington and in London. In 1988 Allison returned from Europe and started Moa Revival, a stationery company producing products with a notable emphasis on Kiwiana. She began creating Cecily cartoons in the late 1990s. Morris, Toby, 1980-: "You really think they'll FINALLY be scared?" 2013

By: Morris, Toby, 1980-

Description: Shows Kim Jong-un tattooing the words 'Nuke' and 'Life' onto his knuckles while asking American basketball player Dennis Rodman "You really think they'll FINALLY be scared?" Refers to the increasingly challenging stance taken by Jong-un and North Korea in their foreign relations with a number of countries and suggests that the western media do not consider Jong-un's claims or actions to possess the degree of threat that he would like. The cartoonist has explained that: 'Ever since Dennis Rodman visited North Korea, Kim Jong-un's threats have stepped up a notch in theatricality. Coincidence? Or did Rodman pass on lessons in how to shock people?' Toby Morris was a runner-up in the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and the Listener's Young Cartoonist Competition 2013 Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
