Doyle, Martin, 1956- :Bleeding hull what next. 25 September 2013

Date: 2013

From: Doyle, Martin Maurice Michael Thomas, 1956- :Digital cartoons

By: Twitter Inc (Firm); Facebook (Firm)

Reference: DCDL-0026226

Description: Accompanying note from the cartoonist states 'At 8 - 0, and only one race to go, we all need to remember the America's Cup is NOT a matter of Life and Death... It is far more important than that. Psychologists have been in the media giving advice to NZ not to take the big final race too much to heart, 'it's just sport', etc. Cartoon depicts a Kiwi crowd watching America's Cup on a large-screen TV in a yacht club.' Accompanying wording on the cartoon states 'As the two yachts came to the showdown score of 8 - 8, an ugly howl of primal anxiety swept the crowd like a mid-ocean storm...' In the competition for the America's Cup, held in September 2013 in San Francisco, Emirates Team New Zealand took a large lead in the early races and seemed to be the inevitable winner, but was beaten by Oracle Team USA. The drama of the early lead and the relentless recovery by Oracle Team USA gripped the New Zealand public. Winter, Mark 1958- :Big Fish. 19 September 2013

Date: 2013

From: Winter, Mark, 1958- : Digital cartoons published in the Southland Times and other papers

By: Southland times (Newspaper)

Reference: DCDL-0026232

Description: Cartoon of a fish, wearing a cap emblazoned 'Oracle'. The caption reads 'The Coutts snapper - A migratory big fish, once native to New Zealand waters is fast becoming an endangered species. Unlikely to hook up with the NZ Olympic Committee, who threw him a line this week, the Coutts snapper's prize catch status is under threat'. Sir Russell Coutts, the New Zealander who was hired to take charge of the campaign by the yacht Oracle Team United States to retain the America's Cup against the challenger Emirates Team New Zealand in the September 2013 races in San Francisco Bay, seemed to be destined to be dismissed with his team apparently losing. So confident was New Zealand that the New Zealand Olympic Committee sent by mistake an email to Coutts, among other athletes, to submit a video message of 'congratulations' for Emirates Team New Zealand. The gloating was premature; Oracle Team United States overhauled the early New Zealand lead to score a comfortable win and thus retain the Cup. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

From: Winter, Mark, 1958- : Digital cartoons published in the Southland Times and other papers

Reference: DCDL-0026239

Description: Captioned 'It's over', the cartoon shows New Zealand looking through a newspaper and asking 'Well, that's over...What else has been happening?' The reply is that 'Zac Efron collapses from partying...John Key wanted to vomit...David Cunliffe has a dodgy CV...Miley's still Miley...Liz and Shane are in the same country...' After the failure of Emirates Team New Zealand to win the America's Cup, the newspapers and the attention of the public returned to the normal news of the day, which seemed to consist of trivial celebrity and political gossip. Winter, Mark 1958- :Foiled. 26 September 2013

Date: 2013

From: Winter, Mark, 1958- : Digital cartoons published in the Southland Times and other papers

By: Southland times (Newspaper)

Reference: DCDL-0026238

Description: Two cartoons. One, captioned 'Foiled...', has the crossed out wording 'Match point. Only one win away. Still only one win away. Will today be the day? This is it! One win and the Auld Mug is ours'. Underneath, and not crossed out are the words 'Still match point'. The second has the caption 'Team NZ's homophones', with the 'omo' crossed out and replaced by 'orror', and shows the words 'Won / One'. The cartoon reflects the frustration of the New Zealand yachting public as they watched the performance of Emirates Team New Zealand in the America's Cup competition, held on San Francisco Bay in September 2013, and saw New Zealand's lead which was one win away from victory being eroded and then overtaken by Oracle Team United States.
