'Our leaders in each other's words'. The prime minister, John Key, is portrayed as Sir Robert Muldoon, the Greens leader, Russel Norman, as a 'fruit loop', the leader of the Labour Party, David Shearer, as 'Devil beast' and Winston Peters of New Zealand First as 'Wonton Peters'.
In June 2013, party conferences, the issue of asset sales and the need for leaders to establish their credibility with their followers resulted in the degeneration of reasoned argument into name-calling. Russel Norman labelled John Key a 'Muldoon', while Key retaliated by calling Norman and the Greens 'fruit loops', and Shearer's Labour Party, bizarrely, 'the Devil Beast'. Winston Peters' stance on Asian immigration gained him the title of 'Won Ton Peters'.
