Description

Photographs relating to the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes taken by BeckerFraserPhotos on 30 May 2011. The majority of these were taken in the CBD (central business district) within the red zone area which was cordoned off after 22 February 2011 earthquake. Several photographs were taken in the suburb of Papanui. Approximately 100 photographs focus on closer details of the damage to buildings and streets, cracks in masonry and pavements, rubble, broken windows, debris, scaffolding, shop window mannequins, signs. The remainder of the photographs show wider shots of the buildings within their street environment and activity within the red zone.

-Includes views taken on Durham Street which show the Copthorne Hotel, St Michael's Church School, Ireland Property Management building, Temple Court building (the office of Green MP Kennedy Graham), Contours, the demolition site of Laycock's building, former Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery, Durham Street Methodist Church, Christchurch District Court and a sculpture in front of the building, Training and Development Centre for Christchurch Casino and Vidpro, Christchurch Casino, Amuri Court, and buildings at 218-220, 344, 332, 330, 328 and 284 Durham Street.

-Includes views taken on Colombo Street showing Chloes Bar, part of Oxford on Avon restaurant and bars, 794 Colombo Street, the Colombo Street Bridge, buildings at 683, 736, 617-621, 628-636, 656, 662-670, 663. 672, 678-684, 683-689, 690, 694, 702-208, 708-710, 732, 735, 736, 753-757, 772-779, a demolition site at 633-637 Colombo Street, Benson Restaurant No.1, Mutual Funds House, Farmers building, Starbucks and Whitcoulls, Forsyth Barr building, the ANZ building, Victoria Square National Bank branch, the Allan McLean building (Bearing Gifts Ltd).

-Includes views taken on Chester Street West and Chester Street East showing Radio Network House, Crowne Plaza Hotel and Christchurch District Court entrance, building at 55 Chester Street West, Poplar Apartments.

-Includes views taken on Cambridge Terrace showing Provincial Council Chambers, the Library Chambers (previously Canterbury Public Library), buildings at 97, 129, 141 Cambridge Terrace, the Christchurch City Council office block and Axiom House at 109 Cambridge Terrace.

-Includes views taken on Armagh Street showing Victoria Square Apartments, staircases of Forsyth Barr building, Christchurch Magistrates Court, Centennial Leisure Centre, interior and exterior views of 195 Armagh Street, Kens Camera and Video, Munns, the BNZ building, Real Estate House, and buildings at 195-199, 236, 281, 200, 218, 154, 139, 176, 198, 240 Armagh Street.

-Includes views taken on Manchester Street showing demolition of Druids building, Treehouse Karaoke Party Bar, an MED sub station, Public Trust Customer Centre, the demolition site at 293, Hotel Grand Chancellor, Kensington House, Sullivans Irish Pub, Peaches and Cream, Christian World Service building, and buildings at 173-175, 178, 128, 267, 230, 128 Manchester Street, and very damaged buildings at 141-149 Manchester Street.

-Includes views taken on Worcester Street showing the liftwell of SBS building, Trinity Centre and views taken on Gloucester Street showing Marque Hotel, and buildings at 176, 173, 62-78, 84, a view at the intersection of Gloucester and Colombo Streets.

-Includes views of buildings taken on Bedford Row, Salisbury Street, Kilmore Street, Tuam Street (Drakes Leisure Centre and Lighthouse Lighting), SOL Square, Cashel Street, Oxford Terrace (Bohemian Cafe and Bar, Edmonds Telephone Cabinet and Drinking Fountain, demolition site of Oxford Terrace Baptist Church), Madras Street (Leicester House), Struthers Lane, Hereford Street (former Christchurch Central Police Station), the intersection of Peterborough and Durham Streets.

-Includes views taken in Papanui showing rubble at corner of Harewood Road and Main Road North, St Pauls Anglican Church and sign, the Haralds shop on Papanui Road.

-Also photographs of activity within the CBD red zone show diggers demolishing the Druids building, the 'Southern Demolition' crane at work, a furniture removal van and crew at work, a crew in high visibility vests and hard hats walking down a street, council crew at intersection of Colombo and High Streets during clean up work, laying shingle on Cashel Mall, a large digger on a truck, a 'Greening the Rubble' installation (brick gabions), a policeman on a bicycle, men working on a high voltage power cable in a ditch.
