- Description
A large red carpet labelled 'The Hobbit' is unfurled, covering a sea of ongoing issues in New Zealand, such as bureaucracy, economic collapse, unemployment, fracking, child abuse, poverty, the quake, leaky homes, etc. Context: The government agreed to contribute $99 million in production costs and add $10 million to Warner Brothers marketing budget for the Hobbit film. When a 2010 dispute with unions threatened to derail the movies, Parliament rewrote the national labour laws. Meanwhile, important social, economic and environmental issues in New Zealand are still waiting to be addressed.
