Description

Shows two trampers walking in deep trenches cut in path over lahar mud covered plain below Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro. The 'Tongariro Crossing' sign on the path says to keep New Zealand clean and green, but it is covered in mud. Context: Te Maari crater of Mount Tongariro erupted on 6 August 2012 raining ash over surrounding region and closing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track (Tongariro Alpine Crossing website 16 Oct 2012).
