Description

Depictions of the heads of six Maori men. The three upper figures were drawn in Sydney, by Alphonse Pellion, during his visit with the crew of Louis de Freycinet's ship Uranie in November-December 1819; figure 2, Piro, is distinguishable by the fact that he wears a European shirt and braces. All three men wear their hair in European styles. The three lower heads are depictions of preserved heads (mokomokai) purchased in Sydney and taken back to France. The lower figures were drawn by S Leroy

On the verso is hand-written, possibly by the donor, 'Freycinet, Voyages autour du monde, Atlas historique 1825'
