Desaulses de Freycinet, Louis Claude, 1779-1842, Saulses de Freycinet, Louis Claude de, 1779-1842

French naval officer and explorer. Born at Montilimar, Drome. In 1793 entered the French navy. Joined in 1800 an expedition to explore the south and south-west coasts of Australia. It set out under Nicolas Baudin in the ships Naturaliste and Geographe. In 1805 he returned to Paris and prepared the maps, plans and narrative of the expedition. The whole work appeared under the title of Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes (Paris, 1807-1816). In 1817, he commanded the Uranie to take pendulum measurements and obtain observations, in geography, ethnology, astronomy, terrestrial magnetism, and meteorology, and to collect specimens in natural history. Visited visited Australia, the Mariana Islands, Hawaiian Islands, and other Pacific islands and South America, and, notwithstanding the loss of the Uranie on the Falkland Islands during the return voyage, returned to France. The results of this voyage were published under the title of Voyage autour du monde sur les corvettes Uranie et la Physicienne en 1824-1844

Description: Shows three huts, grouped around a courtyard, wherein, at right, two women are engaged in rolling out fabric lengths or mats on the ground. They are in the process of making the fabric as explained in the text Domeny de Rienzi's book (volume 2, page 43 in French edition). Plate 115 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Chavannes engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Chavannes). Description: Shows a Maori chief "Tahabe" or "Bahabe" with patu and axe, retreating from the pointed pistol of Jacques Arago in a wooded area just outside Sydney. Tahabe has a full facial moko, shoulder-length hair and is wearing a loin-cloth. Arago has a pistol in both hands. The incident is described in Arago's Souvenirs d'un aveugle : voyage autour du monde. Paris, 1839, Vol 4, p.123-137. The incident took place during the voyage of the Uranie under Louis de Freycinet, in the course of a visit to Sydney in 1819 Another version of this image is shown in a later edition (1845) vol 2, p.296. Arago's clothing is different, the chief holds only one weapon and the surroundings are much more forest-like Title: The title Aoi may be intented to be a version of the chief's name in Maori. A pencil and watercolour drawing by Arago at Te Papa showing a standing Maori man, is titled Aie, Roi de la N.elle Zelande. It could also stand for Ariki (priest). Description: Shows a scene on the deck of the Uranie, with a man in clerical garb, placing his hand on the head of a slightly stooping figure in European dress. The onlookers include King Kamehameha II (in hussar's uniform, probably at left) and his queens and courtiers, in European and traditional islanders' dress. Description: Shows two Chinese women in traditional costume, sitting either side of a small table on a patio, playing a board game similar to checkers (or possibly chess - the italian title indicates a chess game). A Chinese man with queue, leans over the back of the chair on the right, watching the game. There is a tapering tower in the left distance. Plate 51 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has the same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Langlois engraved the French version, but the Italian version has been engraved by Tiozzo. The earlier version in Freycinet's "Voyage autour du monde. Atlas historique", plate 25 (1825), was engraved by Forget, and has a differently shaped playing board, and no background. Description: Shows figure wearing a loin cloth and holding a staff at the left. Before him a male figure kneels in supplication, and further to the right under a tree, stands a couple, the female of which holds a baby in a circular basket or tray. Behind the tree stands another woman, naked. Plate 87 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist (from Pellion) and Peronard the engraver for this plate. This image appears in an earlier form in Freycinet's "Voyage autour du monde" (1825), plate 62, copied by S Leroy from Pellion, and engraved there by Forget. This earlier image has more background details of huts and figures; in addition the supplicating figure may be female. However, according to the text in Domeny (volume 1, page 392 in the French edition), in cases of marital infidelity, it is allowable for the woman to change partners at will, whilst the man is punished for infidelity.
