The cartoon shows Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully reading a newspaper report that says 'NZ soldier killed in Bamiyan Province, Afghanistan'. A paper dart made of newsprint flies through one of McCully's ears and out of the other; it shows text reading 'McCully confident on Afghan stability goal especially in Bamiyan'. Refers to the recent statement by Murray McCully that 'Bamiyan Province in Afghanistan where New Zealand troops have been working since 2003 will be ready to stand on its own before the 2014 deadline set by the troubled country's President, Hamid Karzai.' On 4th August the Defence Force announced that a New Zealand soldier, Lieutenant Timothy O'Donnell' was killed and two others injured in an attack on a routine patrol in Afghanistan.
