Description

The volume contains a journal, written up afterwards, of Stanert's tour with Longshore Potts. The journal begins in 1892 and describes Stanert's travels through Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Ceyon, Port Said, and through England. The journal ends in 1894 but includes other later papers and clippings, including a list of places visited in Great Britain up to 1907.

The New Zealand itinerary included Auckland, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Napier, Hastings, Wellington, Masterton, Blenheim, Nelson, Westport, Reefton, Greymouth, Hokitika, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, Gore, Wyndham, Bluff, Winton, Orepuhi, Invercargill, Riverton, Balclutha, and Ashburton.

The journal contains very little direct observation about his employer, but a lot about the sights and local peculiarities of places visited. Also includes details of shipboard life on some of the vessels Stanert travelled upon along his journey.

Enclosures - Includes foldout maps, newspaper cuttings, ephemera and photographs

Stanert was an American stereopticon (or lantern slide operator) who toured the world in 1892-1894 with the American lecturer Dr Anna Longshore Potts. Later he worked as a vaudville performer and manager.
