Wakatipu (Ship : 1878-1924)

Iron screw steamer of 1945 tons, built 1876 in Scotland, purchased in 1878 by the Union Steam Ship Co., NZ. Ran in the Inter-colonial service, and the Tasmanian service. Re-engined and boilered, and passenger accommodation was built, in 1891. Sold to shipbreakers in 1924. Appears to have made crossings to Stewart Island in the mid-1890s. Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: The volume contains a journal, written up afterwards, of Stanert's tour with Longshore Potts. The journal begins in 1892 and describes Stanert's travels through Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Ceyon, Port Said, and through England. The journal ends in 1894 but includes other later papers and clippings, including a list of places visited in Great Britain up to 1907. The New Zealand itinerary included Auckland, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Napier, Hastings, Wellington, Masterton, Blenheim, Nelson, Westport, Reefton, Greymouth, Hokitika, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, Gore, Wyndham, Bluff, Winton, Orepuhi, Invercargill, Riverton, Balclutha, and Ashburton. The journal contains very little direct observation about his employer, but a lot about the sights and local peculiarities of places visited. Also includes details of shipboard life on some of the vessels Stanert travelled upon along his journey.
