Description: Contains a diary kept by Henry Jull on his travels around Japan in 1917, entitled `A Trip to the East'. Henry Jull describes the trip to Japan aboard the SS `Moeraki' with troops from the 23rd and 24th New Zealand Mounteds. Following a stopover in Australia, Henry Jull transfers to the SS `Tango Maru', where he also visits the Phillipines, Hong Kong and China before arriving in Japan. Once in Japan he visits gardens, palaces and the cities of Yokohama, Kyoto, Hakone, Nagoya, Nara, Nikko and Kobe. On his return voyage to New Zealand he visits Honolulu, San Francisco and Fiji. Description: The journal has pages missing and others are almost illegible. The journal begins on 7 Dec 1836, when the whaler sailed from New Bedford. Brett describes in detail the activities of a harpooner, life on board a whaling ship in general, the other ships they `spoke', and the events experienced during their landfalls and time at sea. The journal has particularly good descriptions of Hawaii Source of title - Transcribed The whaling ship `Massachusetts' made a three-year voyage from New Bedford to the Pacific, hunting whales. The voyage included the Peruvian coast, the Galapagos and Hawaiian Islands, Guadaloupe, the Mexican coast, Juan Fernandez, Massafuero, Quiraquina and Talcahuano Bay. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). Description: Diary kept by Henry Jull on his travels (for business and pleasure) around Japan in 1917, entitled `A Trip to the East'. Henry Jull describes the trip to Japan aboard the SS `Moeraki' with troops from the 23rd and 24th New Zealand Mounteds. Following a stopover in Australia, Henry Jull transfers to the SS `Tango Maru', where he also visits the Phillipines, Hong Kong and China before arriving in Japan. Once in Japan he visits gardens, palaces and the cities of Yokohama, Kyoto, Hakone, Nagoya, Nara and Kobe. Mr Jull appears to have been a businessman and trader of some sort. He notes at one point the goldfish he is bringing back to New Zealand. On his return voyage to New Zealand he visits Honolulu, San Francisco and Fiji. Description: Shows a scene on the deck of the Uranie, with a man in clerical garb, placing his hand on the head of a slightly stooping figure in European dress. The onlookers include King Kamehameha II (in hussar's uniform, probably at left) and his queens and courtiers, in European and traditional islanders' dress. The queens, Kamamalu and Kaahumanu (the dowager queen, consort of Kamehameha I) sit on two chairs at the right. Plate 126 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. In the French edition, Danvin is inscribed as the copyist. Plate 89 in Freycinet's "Voyage autour du monde" (1825), where it is attributed to Arago. According to David W Forbes' \"Encounters with Paradise\" (1992), page 71, the baptism of the High Chief Kalaimoku was the first important Christian ceremony in the Hawaiian Islands, and took place off Kawaihae, Hawaii, on 14 August 1819. It was attended by the new king Kamehameha II and his numerous wives and courtiers. The king was dressed in a blue hussar's uniform.
