Description

Māori group who visited England with William Jenkins in 1863-1864. From left to right: Takerei Ngawaka, Ngāti Tuwharetoa; Hirini Pakia of Ngā Puhi; Tere Pakia (Hariata Te Iringa), Ngā Puhi; Horomona Te Atua, Ngā Puhi, and Hapimana Ngapiko, Te Ati Awa, (both standing); Hare Pomare, Ngā Puhi (reclining), Hariata Pomare, Ngā Puhi; Kamariera Te Hautakiri Wharepapa, Ngā Puhi and Ngāti Rangi; Huria Ngahuia, Ngati Whanaunga; Kihirini Te Tuahu, Rangitihi; Reihana Te Taukawau, Ngā Puhi; and Paretene Te Manu, Ngā Puhi. Taken by an unidentified photographer, possibly at the Roehampton reception, and later copied by William James Harding.

This photo was probably one of the many photographs that William Jenkins bought back to New Zealand after the 1863-4 trip. (Information from 'Hariri Wikitoria!' by Brian Mackrell, 1985, page 65)

Missing members of the group are Hariata Haumu who was in Bow Street Asylum and Wiremu Pou, who had joined the 'Maori Warrior Chiefs' troup. (All information from 'Hariru Wikitoria!' by Brian Mackrell, 1985, page 65)
