Small European settlement viewed from the opposite bank of the river, with bush, including a cabbage tree in the foreground. Brees' text in "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand" suggests that the buildings shown are a survey station.

Karikari today is no longer a settlement. It is listed in the Dept of Survey & Land Information gazeteer as a trig station, not far from Shannon in the Horowhenua / Manawatu area.
