Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Original survey plan showing topographical features divided into grids from Mangaroa and Manganui Creek eastwards to Mt. Heal and southwards to Ash Hill. Shows blocks 2-3, 6-7, 10-11, Mangahao Survey District. Includes roads, Maori tracks, Baker's tracks and contour lines. Features the Mangaone Stream with various named creeks, and the Coach Road near the Hawera trig point. Accompanying map is a log of the Mangahau Survey District, Blocks XIV-XII, sheet 2, (see MapColl-832.45bf/[ca. 1881]/Acc.28698). Map edges have been trimmed. The old native track to Tupapakurua (Returuki) is marked. A cross sectional plan of the same area includes a creek, ditches, concrete and earthenware pipe culverts. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Photocopies of two manuscript letters and a typescript manuscript with the title "The Wings of Love" with a line drawing illustration on first page depicting waka on a river, by Alpha Bennick Harding. The account describes surveying in the bush at Whanganui. The two letters, addressed from 57 Forbes Street Onehunga, dated 15 July 1929 and 18 July 1929 are by Alpha Bennick Harding to his sister Ruth. The letters provide context to the manuscript and originally served as cover letters, as the manuscript was originally sent in two parts. The creation in two parts is reflected in the way the first eleven pages are in typescript, while the remainder, pages 12-17 are in manuscript, and the name of the author appears at the end. He describes his family background, where they lived, his school days, mostly in Palmerston North, joining Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, in 1905 and moving to Nelson in 1906, Hokitika in 1910, Invercargill in 1911, Hastings in 1913, Wanganui from 1919 to 1924 when he worked for the Public Works Department in the King Country and in 1935 his move to Greymouth.
