- Description
Shows a black beetle at its various life stages. According to the artist's notes "breeds in logs and stumps of red oak and other trees, that begins to decay. The worm feeds chiefly on the sap next to the bark. When it first changes, it is a reddish brown colour changing to black by degrees. It flies about in the dusk of evenings nearly erect or upright."
