Description: A brown moths in flight, shown with pupa and caterpillar at various stages of growth. According to artist's notes `This singular species feeds on the Red haws, Sassafras, Persimmon and many other plants. It spins itself a house in which it lives hanging it to the stalk, and feeds by drawing the leaves to it like figure 1. It fastens pieces of the dry stalks on the outside and enlarges it as it grows larger. When disturbed it draws the opening close together. Fig. 2 shows the caterpillar taken out of its house. It finally closed up the opening and changed into Chrysalis 16th June. Fig. 3 is the Chrysalis of the female and fig. 4 of the male. The moth was bred 5th July, another that changes into Chrysalis the beginning of Septr. was bred 27th of April. Figs. 6 and 7 shows 2 views of the female which is very remarkable resembling a maggot and is the most perfect of any species I have ever seen, having not the least rudiments of wings. It is curious and wonderful how they are dispersed generally over the Country, very seldom more that one is to be found on a plant. The caterpillar is frequent, but the male is very rare, and flies very swiftly'. See: Parkinson, P.G. in Turnbull Library record, vol 11 no 1 May 1978. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
