In the foreground, a river crossing with a train of soldiers and a bullock wagon, moving towards an uprooted tree on the riverbank to the left, in a northwards direction. In the left background is Mt Egmont its aspect suggesting that the river is in south Taranaki
However, the work appears very close to the Williams work "Mt Egmont from Oakura 28 June 1864" in the Hocken Library, copied by Joseph Hamley (see ATL E-047-q-037).
