The photograph is by an unknown photographer and shows a man in a top hat on horseback outside steps to the entrance of a stone building. Description: Shows a view of a shallow valley receding away to the distant Mount Taranaki. In the centre is the charred remains of a house; only the chimney and fireplace remain, along with burnt tree trunks. In the foreground is a pond or swampy land, with rushes at the left. In the middle distance at right and left are patches of bush. There are skeletal remains of cattle and cartwheels, likely to have been part of a bullock team. Dated from a watercolour sketch of the same scene, held at the Hocken Library. A further version 'Buggins Clearing, Taranaki, burnt by natives during Maori Wars 1864' was on sale at John Leech Gallery, 1999. All views are from the same standpoint. The version at John Leech Gallery had the addition of a group of Maori seated around a fire in the foreground, a horse and two other men close to the burned out house. Description: Shows the township seen from Marsland Hill with the harbour and Sugar Loaf Rocks in the background and St Mary's Church with the beginnings of the new additions, started in 1860, in the foreground. Also various regiments (including 40th?) and encampments near church, military hospitals, Marsland Hotel, and various other churches. cf. Taranaki Museum's watercolour and pencil drawings of the same scene, and Hocken's col. lithographs, all signed by Edwin Harris, Harris may have copied Gold, and this painting has been attributed to Gold in the past. See Otago Daily Times, 9 Jan 1982, p. 30 for further confirmation of attribution The lithographic copy of this image in St Mary's Church, New Plymouth includes a key to various features. The title is New Plymouth from Marsland Hill. To the left of St Mary's, the two-storied building is Marsland Hotel and military Hospital. To the right, across the road, past the troops, the high-gabled single-storey building with a small porch by its door is the Maori Chapel. The two-storied building opposite the chapel is the Military Hospital. Further off to the right, the tallest building is the Wesleyan Chapel. The flagstaff on the hill between St Mary's and the sea marks the "sailors camp on Mt Elliott". Inscriptions: Mount verso - 40th Regiment, Taranaki, New Plymouth, N.Z. about 1840? Description: In the foreground, a river crossing with a train of soldiers and a bullock wagon, moving towards an uprooted tree on the riverbank to the left, in a northwards direction. In the left background is Mt Egmont its aspect suggesting that the river is in south Taranaki However, the work appears very close to the Williams work "Mt Egmont from Oakura 28 June 1864" in the Hocken Library, copied by Joseph Hamley (see ATL E-047-q-037).
