Description: Shows an heraldic design with clam shells in an outer rectangular frame, containing an oval frame containing one large bull's head with four linked rings at its neck above a helmet on top of a shield featuring three bulls' heads run through with swords. Below, Alexander Turnbull's name is flanked by small panels showing wreathed angels. Article by Penny Griffith in "Turnbull Library record", October 1979, page 107, suggests that this may be a bookplate designed in 1896. Description: A bookplate printed in red ink featuring a capital "J" surrounded by circus performers: a woman standing on horseback, a seal, and a clown holding balloons, each with one of the letters of Jane Taylor's name. A bookplate for the artist's small daughter who was very interested in clowns and circuses at the time (See artist's note on back of plate). The artist was married in 1937 and had a son and a daughter. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Wood engraving, 73 x 69 mm. Description: A bookplate design showing two women sitting and one standing in front of a whare with an elaborately carved front porch. The whole is surrounded by a border using Maori carving designs. Original drawing for this bookplate is at A-136-013 The artist may be Herbert Williams, a close friend of Turnbull's, who printed another bookplate for Turnbull on his Te Rau Press. Description: Shows Zealandia with a New Zealand flag on left, and a Maori warrior on right: between them are two shields, one with the Turnbull coat-of-arms, one with New Zealand insignia. A smaller copy is also glued to the same backing; its size is 65 x 52 mm. Other Titles - Fortune favours the bold The ink drawing for this plate was previously dated ca 1930, but a letter dated 1 November 1951, and enclosing the printed bookplate (from Clyde Taylor to David H Graham), says "I send you a few copies of our new bookplate, drawn to our own design by James Berry" (leter housed at BOOKPLATES-Graham-H-Turnbull-1951-01). This suggests the bookplate was made in 1951, although it is possible that it was a 1951 re-issue. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Relief print, 107 x 90 mm.
