Description: A programme of entertainment by the Wellington Orchestral Society (conductor J Maughan Barnett), the Wellington Liedertafel (conductor Robert Parker), a song solo from Miss Phoebe Parsons, a display of views by the Wellington Camera Club, banjo selections from Mr Fraser, a piano solo by Mrs Levi, a song solo by Miss N Parsons. In the Government Whip's Room there was to be a display of Rontgen X-rays by Mr R T Turnbull assisted by Mr R C Jones. The inside spread shows a floor plan of the Parliamentary Buildings showing where each entertainment was to take place. The words of the "Singers' Welcome" by Grieg are reproduced on the back page. Description: Copy of the third edition of 'The Imperial Postage Stamp Album, with comprehensive catalogue. Illustrated with upwards of one thousand engravings, including a series of sixty-seven of the national arms of various countries', by E S Gibbons. Published by Stanley, Gibbons & Company, London, 1876. Orignally owned by Robert Turnbull with Robert Turnbull's bookplate on front pastedown. Album contains stamps and postcards from the period circa 1840s to 1920. Extensive stamp dealer annotations in ink and pencil throughout. Numerous pages have been partially or fully cut from the album with some loose fragments laid in. Also includes a French postcard dated 1880 addressed to "Miss Turnbull, Mount Henley, Sydenham Hills, Upper Norwood, London, England", postmarked "Menton" in France, Title transcribed from item. The painting was until ca 2000 catalogued by the Library as being 'grandfather of A H Turnbull'; however the subject was Alexander Turnbull's great-grandfather, a merchant of Galashiels in the 1790s and later. Description: Letter book comprising 1000 numbered leaves of tissue paper, preceded by a section of pages with alphabetised index, for the entry of names (and addresses) of correspondents with blotting paper interleaving. The holograph letters are written in ink, and some have amendments in pencil, and annotations in blue pencil, some are typescript, with autograph signatures and amendments in ink. Letters in this volume are dated between 28 May 1898 and 17 May 1900. The spine title label "Letter Book" is augmented with "Private" above, "A H Turnbull" and "A H T 3" below. There is a typescript letter dated 13 August 1898 to James Leigh-Woods of Natal, South Africa tipped in on page 1, and a newspaper clipping mounted to rear free endpaper ("Obituary: Mr. J. M. Deck", 'Evening Post', 18 February 1943, page 3), featuring a portrait of John Massy Deck (1869-1943). The letter Turnbull has mounted at the front of the letterbook, dated 13 August 1898, relates to his sister Joanna Turnbull, later known as Lady Joanna Elizabeth Leigh-Wood, 1870-1955: "Dear Sir, Enclosed I beg to hand you copy of cablegram sent to you today at my sister's request and from it you will gather that she has finally decided to break off her engagement with you." The addressee was James Leigh-Wood, later Sir James, who married Turnbull's sister two year later in the year 1900. Quantity: 1 volume(s) in slipcase.
